LBHC Ladies 1s clinch league title in final weekend showdown

Charlotte Coumbe14 Apr - 11:00

Final game win takes L1s to league victory

In a season-long battle that went down to the final weekend, our Ladies 1s travelled to Slough whilst their closest rivals, Wallingford and Oxford, went head-to-head to provide a nail-biting finish to a fantastic season.

As the three teams headed into their final game, Leighton and Wallingford were only split by goal difference, both on 48 points. Oxford were only three points behind with a superior goal difference to both, so it was all to play for.

Although Slough 2s sat at the bottom of the table, it was a tricky away fixture for Leighton. Slough had the opportunity to play up-and-coming future 1s players and capitalise on home pitch advantage.

The game was an edgy affair. However, it was Leighton who broke the deadlock, with Kirsty Scrivener finishing smartly after a rapid attack down the right. The home team was soon back on terms after taking full advantage of an unfortunate mistake, which led to a neatly converted PCA.

After the restart, Slough adopted a low-block press tactic, limiting opportunities for Leighton and trying to catch them on the break. However, through sheer persistence, Leighton emerged victorious with a 2 -1 win, thanks to a winning goal from Karmel Brazier. This victory laid down the marker for their chasers.

Wallingford and Oxford played out a 3-2 thriller at Hithercroft Road. Thankfully, it was not enough for either team to catch Leighton, who finished top of the table with 51 points, just ahead of Wallingford on goal difference.

It was a long, hard-fought season, and the team can be very proud as they now venture forth to the South Central Women's Premier Division 2. Well done to everyone involved, and good luck for the 2024/2025 season.
