Leighton Buzzard Ladies 4 v Rickmansworth 2
Leighton Buzzard travelled to Rickmansworth for their first league game since the Christmas break, although this was a bottom of the table clash the two sides produced some good hockey. Leighton started well and absorbed the pressure placed on them by Rickmansworth. However, close to half time a solo effort by the young Rickmansworth midfielder saw Leighton go into the half time break 1-0 down. In the second half Leighton stuck to their task and a number of chances were saved or just went wide and Leighton were unlucky not to equalise. The marking was superb and the team worked together to get the reward for their hard work, none more so than Emma Selfe the Player of the Match. Leighton pushed to the final whistle but it was not to be, the game ending 1-0 to Rickmansworth.
Leighton Buzzard Ladies 4 v Bedford 4
After last week’s bottom of the table clash, Leighton faced high flying top of the table Bedford. From the start Leighton belied their lowly position and took the game to the opposition and deservedly took the lead with a well worked play from one end of the pitch to the other finished off by Ashleigh Hennessey in the 15th minute. Leighton stuck to the task and were unlucky as the half drew to the end to concede a goal.
In the second half injuries and the fact Bedford had a maximum squad of 16 players who they rotated to maximum effect, to Leighton down to 10 players for much of the second half took its toll. And one goal which would have graced the Premier League from a penalty corner strike sealed Leighton’s fate to a 5-1 defeat. Nevertheless, this was a fantastic team performance which they can build and take great confidence from and the whole team were deservedly players of the match.
